About the WOODmark® Programme

The WOODmark® programme is an independent, national quality assurance brand for timber treatment.

Quality Assured Timber

Why Treat Timber?

Natural timber, while beautiful and versatile, is not always naturally equipped to withstand the harsh elements, such as rain and humidity, that New Zealand's environment often presents.

To ensure timber can be reliably used in building applications and stand the test of time, it may need proper treatment.

Introducing WOODmark®

This is where WOODmark® comes in. Managed by us at the NZ Timber Preservation Council, WOODmark® is an independent national quality assurance brand for timber treatment.

The WOODmark® name and symbol represent treated timber products that meet the stringent standards set out by the us, including compliance with NZS 3640, and AS/NZS 1604 New Zealand’s treatment standards.

Only licensed treatment plants, dedicated to upholding these high standards, are permitted to use the WOODmark® symbol.

Is My Timber Treated?

Trust Only WOODmark® Certified Timber for Long-Lasting Quality

When it comes to building materials, not all timber is created equal. WOODmark® is your assurance that the timber you’re using has been rigorously tested and treated to meet the highest standards of durability and reliability. Your structure deserves timber that’s built to last.

Make sure it’s Treated: Look for the WOODmark Branding Code

Ensure your timber is up to standard by checking for the WOODmark® branding code. This may appear as a label, stapled plastic tags, a burn brand on the end, or a continuous brand along the timber’s length. The WOODmark® code is your assurance of quality and durability—don’t settle for anything less.

Choose the Right Timber for Your Environment: Check the Hazard Class

Timber displaying the WOODmark® also includes important details about the Hazard Class rating of the wood.

The Hazard Class indicates the level of treatment the wood has undergone, tailored to specific environments. For example, wood may be treated to withstand conditions like being in the ground, near the ocean, or exposed to high moisture. Always check for the Hazard Class which is displayed as a ‘H’ followed by a number (H1.2, H4, etc.) to ensure the timber is not only been treated, but also suited to the specific conditions of your project. You can find out more about Hazard Classes here.
