Proposed changes to NZS 3640:2003

27 January 2006

New Zealand Timber Preservation Standard

Currently there is a proposed amendment to NZS 3640:2003 the New Zealand timber treatment standard.

The main proposed amendments are:

1. To permit the use of boron at a retention of 0.80%, in H3.1 provided an oil alkyd, modified acrylic or modified latex coating has been applied to all surfaces at the treatment plant and, where it is used above ground, outdoors, the exposed surfaces are protected by a further two coats of exterior grade paint. The surface coating applied at the treatment plant is to be white. The timber is to be branded along one face with “Paint when used outdoors.

2. To permit the use of copper naphthenate at a retention of 0.05% elemental copper in H3.1 for fascia, cladding and joinery only, provided a primer/sealer together with a continuous face brand has been applied to all surfaces at the treatment plant and that the timber is subsequently used in conjunction with a two coat paint system.

If you wish to see the proposed changes in detail please contact me.

The proposals are open for public comment so if you have any views you wish to make known to Standards New Zealand feel free to do so. Contact me first so I can provide you with the official comment form. TPC is planning to support the changes subject to modifications to ensure there is consistency in the text and requirements. The closing date for comment is 20 February 2006.
